CURRICULUM UNIT: COLOR, CULTURE & PERSONAL MEANING

GRADE/AGE LEVEL: HIGH SCHOOL, Intermediate-Advanced

Artists often draw from their values, cultures and traditions to create works of art that are reflective of their own personal and cultural identities, utilizing the expressive characteristics of a medium to build visual meaning. In this unit, students will plan and execute a painting that illustrates their own ideas about culture and identity, concentrating on employing purposeful color and effective techniques of composition to tell their story. Students will explore the works of culturally diverse artists, such as Frida Kahlo, Kerry James Marshall, Makita Wilbur.
